Well I’m the Lucky Goon (The Arcade, June 2013)

Well I’m the lucky goon
Who composed this tune
From birds arranged on the high wire…

-Elvis Costello, “Couldn’t Call It Unexpected #4”

And so, another post about stuff from the June 2013 iteration of The Arcade. Here’s the Vespertine Fabric Birds (two red song birds, which are a solo item themselves) and a teal sleepy owl (RARE), tucked into the broken cage (RARE). Image Continue reading

At first I thought it a dream… (The Arcade, June 2013!)

At first I thought it a dream that I was in.
Lost , lost in a sea of glass and tin.
But no, so dipping my hand in the back of my jeans,
I grabbed a handful of coins to feed the machines.
“Step up and play,” each machine seemed to say
As I walked round and round the penny arcade.
“Just ring the bell on the big bagatelle
And you’ll make all the coloured lights cascade.”

Roy Orbison, ‘Penny Arcade’

So yeah, it’s that time of year again. The start of a new quarter, a new season, when The Arcade opens up to suck your wallet dry.

What’s there? Well. I’m so glad you asked.

The item from the Arcade in this photo are the two potted plants, the ‘Oolong Teacup Planters’ by ARIA, at a mere L$25 each!  I put out an iris and a moth orchid for variety.  But come inside, plenty more to see… Continue reading

On Things Japanese (with a few haiku, via Strawberry!)

As you may have noticed from a recent post, I like Japan.  I like the culture, I like the look of the country, I like the architecture, I like the food, I lke the clothing.  This holds true in Second Life, as well: there’s some remarkable things being done by Japanese creators inworld, creators that many of us probably never even heard of.
I feel a little retrospective, today. Someone I know had his rezday today, and it got me to thinking about the fact my fifth is coming up.  Which got me to thinking about where I’ve been, where I’m going… and also thinking about what I was doing just at that moment! Continue reading

Stuff From Homestuff’s Lounge Gifts!

So there is one drawback to living in a skybox: I don’t have a handy garden plot to drop landscaping goods on.  I’ve used my skybox in past to just have an indoor garden, but somehow that seems too surreal with my current skybox state, so years’ worth of gardening collecting have gone completely to waste of late, with my inventory chock full of items that I never even bother rezzing anymore.

In addition to being a kitsch junkie, I also enjoy playing with gardening.  One of the few projects I’ve pursued from start to finish was doing my own koi pond and waterfall, in my first year inworld.  That went… presentably well, I suppose.
So when Ivy added the Homestuff group to the Menstuff/Womenstuff family of hunts and groups (should I just start calling the collective Stuffstuff?), I was pleased as punch.  As I noted in my prior post, most of what was in there of any interest to people who are of the feminine gender in SL was a single chair, and I promised my next post would cure that imbalance some. So here we go, some baubles and bits for around the house and garden! Continue reading

When You Wish Upon a Star…

So I’ve been meaning and meaning and MEANING to get around to blogging about the cool thing I got introduced to by Marianne McCann, the Robin (Sojourner) Wood “Star Light” gachas.  L$50 a pop, and you have 14 different ones that you might get. The awesome thing about it is that the rares are not TERRIBLY rare, and even the commons are pretty!

They’re mesh, so they’re a stunning 1 land impact each.  Also, they come with a fairly short twisty cord that is part of the mesh… but if you need a longer cord, Robin was good enough to tuck a notecard into the object which tells you all about the various things you can set and also walks you through creating a longer cord for them!  If you like my cord and fixture set up, feel free to ping me inworld, I can toss you a copy of them to save you a couple of the steps Robin talks you through.

You can set them up to just go to full bright instead of turning on, too, if (like me) it seemed like a good idea to you to hang 7 of them all in a bunch.  There’re several brightness settings for the lamps, too, and you can also tell them to attune to estate time as far as their fullbright or illumination goes.

Since I was finally able to go home and get some proper close-ups of some of these, a few more photos.  This one’s named Star Light – Icy Vines:

and here’s the Star Light – Asian Flowers:

Notice how they have completely different cutout patterns in them?  There was clearly a lot of thought put into these suckers!

Last, here’s my personal favorite, the Starfield RARE.

You can get them at Robin (Sojourner) Wood’s shop, for L$50, by clicking on this SLURL right here.

The Owls Are Not What They Seem.

Kitschings of Distinction

So guilty shameful secret time: I love kitsch.  I love tacky things, gaudy things, mid-century aesthetic.  I seldom actually look for such stuff in SL, and out of the blue, someone told me that Collabor88 was doing ‘kitsch’ as their theme this month.

So… shopping happened.

Here is me with my three purchases from Collabor88 then! And a couple other of my kitsch objects.

The Easter Island head may have been a clue that I wanted to go to this Collabor88, mightn’t it?

The two lamps are from Schadenfreude, and the chair (which is the other purchase) is from Trompe Loeil.  The candle is a gacha prize from Nylon Outfitters, the “(NO) Doll Head Vase – Sugar”, while the side table’s a gacha from Scarlet Apple, the “{sa} Scarlet Apple My Chevron Console Rich Wood”

Here’s the first of the two lamps:

Because doesn’t everybody need a green hula girl?  She’s the “Schadenfreude Alien Hula Lamp”, from Schadenfreude.
There are a few things you can’t see in this picture: the lamp comes with a re-texture HUD, which enables you to choose one of several different textures for the lampshade and for the fringe at the bottom.
Also, the grass skirt sways side to side slightly, as if she were hula’ing.

The other lamp is their “Green Mermaid Lamp”: same color-change hud for the lampshade here. Image

The other thing I bought was this lovely chair, which was, actually, the main reason I came to the Collabor88 event: I have a weakness for Trompe Loeil’s stuff, too (indeed, the big round paper lantern is one of theirs!)

There are several patterns for these chairs, this is the “Thrift Shop Accent Chair Tanno Pattern”.  Again with the half-baked ‘Japanese’ thing going on in my house, I know.

Each of these three items is a mere L$88 from the Collabor88 shopping center, which is reachable by clicking below. Happy shopping, kitschmavens!

Gacha CARNIVAL! No, not The Arcade, not The Fair, not The Thingy. The Gacha Carnival

So yes, there’s a Gacha carnival running inworld now.  There’s a lot of lovely stuff for the ladies, but as I don’t really tend to wear dresses or skirts or leggings too much, a bit less variety for me. 😉

However! I did find some shoes I rather liked: Image

And at L$50 the pair I bought two:

These were by Sweet Valentine, and hey, the price is good!  There’s a WIDE variety of fabric for them, and mercifully? they come with an unrigged mesh pair of shoes, so that I could wear them and edit them to fit my big man-feet.

Ruca Tease is doing umbrellas that are quite cute!  And here is one, shown here with the -JoHaDeZ- “arty vase “flat eggy” colored”, and Man in the Moon bookends by Persnickity.

I have never seen the point of bothering really dolling up a bedroom in Second Life. You do not sleep there.  You do not lay there and read a book.  You use it for one thing IF you bother using it for anything at all.

The “[Loft I] Bedroom Kit in Mesh by Night Store” has changed my opinion on the matter.  Here, have a good look:

A big honkin’ piece of mesh, this: 20some land impact, and a mere L$100 on the gacha!

So hey, go check out the Gacha Carnival!  You might well find some things you want.

There’s a Light, Over at the Frankenstein Place

Last night, after I did the Game of Livingrooms post, I was chatting on the Homestuff channel in Second Life, as I’d come up with something I needed for the house and was having trouble finding it.
If you don’t know what Homestuff is, it’s a roughly-annual hunt that is moderated by a team of select individuals (and also me), where the point is about exposing the hunters to new and innovative home design.  I’ll let the more erudite members of the gang speak for themselves here, on their website.

I’ve been a fan since Ivy Maverick started the group, which is how I came to volunteer to mod: the crowd are nice folks, too, everyone’s extremely helpful and friendly.  There is a minimal fee to join (L$50), so as to cut down on spammers, but you can more than make that up with the gifts available in the Lounge (ask on the channel!).  As the Homestuff crew is a phenomenally smart group about what’s new and interesting in Second Life home furnishings, I figured this group of folks would be a terrific place to bounce around the tricky question of where to find the light fixture I wanted.
See, the skybox I’m living in nowadays is very early-20th-century, very Deco, and I wanted a light fixture that’d look of the period. What the hell, if I’m going to play with my dollhouse, I want it to look Just Right, dammit.
Don’t comment on the huge Easter Island statue in the corner, all right? If you don’t think that’s right, I don’t know what to say to you.
So anyway… I threw the question out to the Homestuff gang, figuring hey, they’re home-design fans, they’re going to know where I might find what I’m looking for.  And I got a few great suggestions (including one I’m likely going to have to go back for), then I got an IM from someone. One of [CIRCA]’s designers, to be specific.
Now, [CIRCA] make gorgeous stuff. For those who’ve been following along and wondered where I was when I took my interior photography, it was one of their builds: the “[CIRCA] – “Studio Coast” Loft Build – Grunge Tan” (and really, if you want a nice big open space with lots of room for fun with shadows and light, BUY THE LOFT BUILD NOW!).  The funky branch with the photo frames on it was a hunt gift, also from CIRCA, so yeah, I’ve shown you a couple of their items here… so when Cherelle Capra IM’ed me to say she had something she thought might suit the need, I was all ears, naturally!

May I have the pleasure of introducing you to the [CIRCA] – Venetian Chandelier – Radiant Gold.  This is part of an upcoming release (or may be part of it): I saw it finished also in a lovely aqua-tone palate, and while I didn’t see more than that, Cherelle gave me the impression she was planning on several different finishes.

It gives off a good bit of light:

Imageand is covered with gorgeous textures, as you’ve already seen.  Cherelle’s planning on doing several different color tones with them, and the price point she’s thinking about is somewhere in the $L300 range.  Not too pricey, considering what a beautiful piece of work it is!

I say ‘may be’ part of an upcoming release, as Cherelle thought she might not do it in this color for wider release.  This certainly should give you an idea of what IS coming in that release, though.  So keep your eyes open for the Venetian Chandelier from CIRCA…

Image…appearing here with other items from [CIRCA] Living: the six pieces of framed art on the left and the branch on the right are both hunt gifts from [CIRCA] Living.  If you are shopping for home decor, I can’t recommend them highly enough!! Click on their name to get an SLURL so you can visit!
